NB Chair’s view of why we have a “Christmas” Party when we’re non-religious: It’s what almost everyone calls the big national mid-winter festival, despite the fact that most Brits no longer identify as Christian. The name reflects 1000 years of Christian history. But the festival itself goes back a lot further, and it’s full of non-Christian symbolism. For the same sort of reason, Christians happily call the 4th day of the week “Thor’s Day”, and their key religious festival “Easter” (named after “Eostre”, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of sunrise and spring).
